Do you have the right to work in Denmark?

We are lawyers that can help

We help you gain clarity – quickly and correctly

Your right to work in Denmark depends on your residence permit. The rules vary, and mistakes can have serious consequences.

At Danishvisa.com, we provide specialised advice and handle applications and changes – quickly and correctly.

What applies to you?

Residence and work permit tied to a job

As a rule, your permit is limited to the employer and the position stated in the permit.

When changing jobs, position, or employer, a new permit is generally required before work may commence.

Students in higher education

As a student, you typically have a limited work permit with a maximum of 90 hours per month (with the exception of June, July, and August). Exceeding the number of working hours may have serious consequences for your residence permit.

Family reunification, permanent residence, or asylum

If you hold a permanent residence permit, asylum, or have come to Denmark through family reunification, you are generally exempt from the requirement to hold a work permit and may work without a separate permit.

WARNING

Illegal employment can be costly – get legal help in time

When a third-country national (outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland) works in Denmark, both the employee and the employer have an independent responsibility to ensure that the work is carried out on a lawful basis.
As an employer, you are obligated to actively ensure that no one performs work – not even voluntary or unpaid – without a valid right to do so. Violations may result in significant fines, police reports, and serious consequences for both the company and the employee.

Typical risks

(examples – not exhaustive)

  • No lawful residence in Denmark
  • Residence as a student, but work beyond the permitted number of hours
  • Arbejdstilladelse knyttet til én arbejdsgiver, men arbejde udført for en anden
  • Continued work during a period where only a job-seeking right exists
  • Residence as an au pair or folk high school student combined with work in a company
